The newest issue of The Relevant Issue has a great article by Chuck Lynch that should definitely be read by all:

What if state licensing boards were to randomly make a handful of pretext calls each year to examiners offering extra payment for a predetermined outcome? I think this would be a strong deterrent against any temptation that may be out there. The APA might want to adopt a similar measure for members. Any thoughts?

Polyops,

ethics in the polygraph profession is a major pet issue of mine. I too have been offered bribes (the most 3 times my normal fee) for predetermined outcomes.

First of all, any examiner who takes money for pre determined outcomes is an unprofessional scumbag and I would only request a few minutes alone with them, in a room, to "find out why" they would do such a despicable thing and embarrass my profession.

Additionally, anyone likely to accept bribes is not likely to think it is proper conduct and would certainly not be foolish enough to agree to something like that during a (cold) phone conversation.

Reputation is EVERYTHING in this profession. Encouraging the reporting of improper or unethical conduct to associations and licensing boards is the only avenue we have in policing ourselves. If anything (my humble opinion), the major associations should jointly establish an anonymous violation reporting board, e-mail address of phone number (like the BBB) whereby complaints can be made, logged and registered/recorded. I know this opens a can of worms; but how many of us know of bad examiners and won't tell anyone except our buddies, while having a beer...?

As for those not subjecting themselves to any oversight by licensing committees or associations, there is little that can be done...unless the state reinitiates summary executions for misdemeanors...

Jim

Great story!

As a side note, the husband in his haste to conduct the investigation on his own actually committed a crime when he taped the wife’s conversation with Chuck.

Here is the federal law: http://assembler.law.cornell.edu/uscode/html/uscode18/usc_sup_01_18_10_I_20_119.html

Hey guys!

Does all this sound a little familiar? Look at the thread I started on 11/05/04 titled "Dishonest Examiner Solicitation". This lady was not offering three times my fee.....she was talking thousands of dollars. It was nothing to her as she stood to lose millions! I had another offer of $5,000 from a business executive who stood to lose everything in a divorce.

It today's world, people can take damn near everything you own. There is only one thing they can't take. It has to be willingly given away by you. It's your integrity.

Thanks just the same, but I'll hang onto mine!

I think it's like the old story about the man who asked the woman if she would sleep with him for a million bucks. She said yes. He then asked her if she would do it for 50 bucks. She said "what do you think I am a whore?" To which he replied "we've already established that you are we're just negotiating on the price now. The amount is not the inportant issue. I have just as much heartburn with the guy who takes $50.00 each for running 5 15 minute one chart tests at a bass tournament. Buying the result or buying the process...if money is driving the deal and not professionalism and integrity then there's little difference.
